COBIT 7: A New Era for Enterprise IT Governance

COBIT 7 has been launched on 27 October 2026. The latest evolution of ISACA's globally recognized governance framework introduces significant innovations in digital accessibility, artificial intelligence governance, regulatory alignment and governance performance assessment.
1. Key Innovations in COBIT 7
Dynamic Digital Platform
One of the most significant changes in COBIT 7 is the transition from traditional static PDF publications to a dynamic, digitally delivered framework.
The new platform is designed to provide:
- Continuous access to updated framework content.
- Mobile-compatible access.
- Interactive navigation and mappings.
- Enhanced integration between governance components.
- Customizable assessment capabilities.
The COBIT 7 digital publishing platform is available through two subscription options:
| Subscription | Features | ISACA Members | Non-Members |
| Basic | Foundation concepts and core governance objectives with read-only access. | USD 75/year | USD 100/year |
| Premium | Full framework integration and access to a customizable assessment module. | USD 385/year | USD 550/year |
New Design Factors
COBIT 7 introduces two additional design factors intended to improve the customization of enterprise governance systems:
- Organizational Health Context: Incorporates organizational characteristics and conditions into governance system design.
- Information/Data Strategies: Strengthens the consideration of enterprise information and data strategies when designing governance arrangements.
Embedded AI Risk Scenarios
COBIT 7 strengthens its coverage of artificial intelligence governance by integrating AI-related risk scenarios and governance objectives into the framework.
These enhancements aim to help organizations address the governance challenges associated with emerging AI technologies and increasingly autonomous systems.
The framework also reinforces its alignment with ISACA's Digital Trust Ecosystem Framework (DTEF), supporting ethical, transparent and secure technology adoption.
Regulatory Alignment
COBIT 7 is designed to support organizations operating within increasingly complex regulatory environments.
Its governance architecture can help organizations structure and coordinate their compliance activities in relation to regulatory requirements and international standards, including:
- NIS2: The European Union's cybersecurity directive.
- DORA: The EU Digital Operational Resilience Act.
- ISO standards:International standards addressing information security, risk management and IT governance.
COBIT provides governance guidance and control structures but does not, by itself, establish regulatory compliance.
Advanced Assessment Capabilities
COBIT 7 introduces an enhanced assessment approach designed to help organizations evaluate governance and management practices more effectively.
The announced digital assessment module will support practitioners in:
- Identifying gaps in governance and management practices.
- Assessing capability and maturity levels.
- Identifying priority improvement areas.
- Supporting continuous governance improvement initiatives.
